Introduction

To provide candidates with practical knowledge and skills to manage asbestos in buildings and to provide a basic knowledge of asbestos removal procedures. Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of the contents of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and in particular regulation 4 and the supporting Approved Code of Practical L143.

Suitable for

This is an ideal course for those responsible for managing asbestos in a building or estate and who have no real experience within the asbestos industry.

Learning Objectives

To provide a practical knowledge and the skills to manage asbestos in buildings, as well as the knowledge base to audit asbestos removal projects.

Exam Format

Written Theory Examination: This is a closed-book examination comprising 40 short-answer questions to be answered in two hours. The examination is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.

Written Practical Examination: This is an open-book practical examination with up to 35 questions, illustrated with photographs and including diagrams and extracts from documents, to be answered in two hours. Candidates are permitted to access relevant reference material but not electronic databases, computers, tablets or mobile phones. Communication between candidates is not permitted. The examination is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.

Programme Outline

  1. Legislation: Including Managing Health and Safety at Work, Control of Asbestos Regulations, Hazardous Waste Regulations, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and RIDDOR.
  2. Management of Asbestos in Buildings
  3. Preparation: Job specification, preparation of a plan of work by the contractor, tender evaluation etc.
  4. Enclosures: Correct principles of an enclosure for asbestos removal, methods of enclosure examination and associated documentation, procedures for entry, exit and decontamination, use of negative pressure monitors, use of secondary enclosures.
  5. Remediation measures: Encapsulation and sealing
  6. Removal procedures: To ensure that asbestos dust levels are kept as low as is reasonably practicable inside the enclosure
  7. Waste removal: including removal, storage and disposal of waste from an enclosure
  8. Role of laboratory/analyst

Duration:

It is envisaged that this course will be conducted over 4 days which includes the examination and practical assessment. This course will require approximately 24 hours’ study time, of which at least 18 hours will be taught (teaching and practical). The additional study time will be required in the candidates’ own time.

Fee:

£650 + VAT per delegate, plus £150 BOHS examination fee for public courses.
